‘All those little things – make sure you do them’: The striker’s road from rehabilitation to success with the Basque club

Whenhe initial occasion the Spanish forward featured in English soil, an young playing for the reserve team against Borussia Mönchengladbach Under-23s at the English ground in the 2015 season, he scored. On his next visit he appeared in the country, against Sunderland two months later, he netted. The third time, against Pep Guardiola’s team not long later, indeed, he repeated the feat. As he revisited to the northwest to take on Manchester United at the sports complex in 2017, he did it once more. It was a superb volley, too. “Truly,” he states, “it’s a top-class goal I’ve ever scored.” Thus the club did what they had to do: they substituted him.

“I was furious,” the attacker reveals, then chuckling. “I’m sure there’s footage. We traveled to face United and I performed well. They kept me out of the final 45 minutes: I was without a signed my contract, goals were flowing, speculation was rife, it’s typical. I’m unsure regarding interest from Newcastle, but I recall seeing about the Red Devils, standard transfer gossip. It’s unclear if it was accurate, but even if they had called, I would have wanted to stay at Bilbao. I’m fortunate to be here.”

La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph

At the facility, the city, the morning session is set to begin; following that, the brief trip to Loiu airport and another flight to the UK, this time to face Newcastle in the Champions League on Wednesday. Mentioning that phrase makes Guruzeta smile. This is proving a tough year for the team, partially owing to the requirements of being here. Defeated late on in the weekend clash, they have managed just one win of their last eight matches and fallen to the Gunners and Dortmund in Europe. But, look at the overall situation, the major occasions he’s experienced and upcoming events, and a sense of thankful reflection about him.

In the the period since he had come back to Athletic, Guruzeta has been a semi-final participant, prevented from reaching a domestic final by United, and has traveled on a traditional boat through the waterway surrounded by a huge crowd after lifting the trophy, the club’s first trophy in 40 years. Currently he stands as the club’s leading marksman in the Champions League, where they are distinctive and debuting in ten years. “I never imagined this,” he admits.

The player believed it challenging enough just to earn a spot and that proved true. Born to the former Real Sociedad player his father and a season ticket holder at the opposition side, Gorka is a graduate of Antiguoko, the San Sebastián club that developed the Arsenal manager, the legendary midfielder and the tactician. His move to Athletic came at seventeen but after his first-team bow in that summer, he suffered a ACL injury, being released, a demotion and a return before he could truly get a chance, returning at 26 to experience the peak of his career.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta gets ready to play Newcastle in the European competition.

“You go into the academy thinking you won’t reach the senior squad but every phase you progress through you’re persisting and you can see it getting closer. You arrive and then … departure is necessary.” He had limited game time in six games between his debut and February 2019. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches with them and my knee gave way.

“A massive setback but I reflect on it as a turning point because it forced me to alter the outlook. Recovering from a long-term injury is hard, but it aids growth. You adopt practices previously lacking. Previously I was casual, but I did the sessions and then head home, like when you’re a kid. At Lezama, facilities are comprehensive, so take full advantage. Practice, prevention. Hit the weights. With hip imbalance, work on that. Assuming ankle mobility is good, improve it more. All those ‘silly things’: perform them.

“In the first team you’re going to crash into players who have been in battles repeatedly. Extremely powerful. Seeing previous pictures: my physique was slight. So what happens, happens. Look at pictures of me now and the improvement is clear. The setback taught me. Practice concludes, but further effort is needed. Everyone else is ready, really ready; the same applies.”

You also have to play. Guruzeta departed upset in that year, in his early twenties, dropping into the second division. With Sabadell in 2020-21, he scored three times in numerous matches. At Amorebieta in the second half of 2021-22, the scoring picked up. “Players go through it: temporary moves, ended deals. Should you reverse it, effort, faith, and if one day they need someone for your role, recall is possible. Readiness is vital. When the opportunity came, a fantasy realized. The trophy success, play in Europe, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”

No wonder he says appreciate the experience. Especially after the previous season which, at times, was focused on persistence. After being leading scorer with a high tally, last season he got seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
