‘All those little things – make sure you do them’: The striker’s road from rehabilitation to success with the Basque club

“A massive setback but I reflect on it as a turning point because it forced me to alter the outlook. Recovering from a long-term injury is hard, but it aids growth. You adopt practices previously lacking. Previously I was casual, but I did the sessions and then head home, like when you’re a kid. At Lezama, facilities are comprehensive, so take full advantage. Practice, prevention. Hit the weights. With hip imbalance, work on that. Assuming ankle mobility is good, improve it more. All those ‘silly things’: perform them.

“In the first team you’re going to crash into players who have been in battles repeatedly. Extremely powerful. Seeing previous pictures: my physique was slight. So what happens, happens. Look at pictures of me now and the improvement is clear. The setback taught me. Practice concludes, but further effort is needed. Everyone else is ready, really ready; the same applies.”

You also have to play. Guruzeta departed upset in that year, in his early twenties, dropping into the second division. With Sabadell in 2020-21, he scored three times in numerous matches. At Amorebieta in the second half of 2021-22, the scoring picked up. “Players go through it: temporary moves, ended deals. Should you reverse it, effort, faith, and if one day they need someone for your role, recall is possible. Readiness is vital. When the opportunity came, a fantasy realized.
